It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of our former President, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, in December. Robert was President of Surrey Youth Focus from April 2011 to September 2015, including my first year at Surrey Youth Focus. I found him extremely welcoming and down to earth, never taking life too seriously. I will always consider one of the most privileged events I have ever had was a tea at Robert’s house where he showed us photos of his family in Africa and talked of his childhood memories of his grandfather Lord Baden-Powell who founded the Scouts. Robert’s wife, Patience Baden-Powell, had also been our President prior to Robert.
The following limerick was read at this funeral, at his request, and he was keen for it to be passed on:
Don't look for the flaws as you go through life
And even when you find them,
It is wise to be kind, to be somewhat blind
And to look for the virtues behind them.
Thank you for all that you brought us, Robert.
