The Value of Volunteering to Organisations

Volunteering is at the heart of the experience of the voluntary, community and faith sector.

Contribution to society

Volunteers contribute hidden time, commitment and energy to the voluntary sector which values millions of pounds.  Volunteers also have a huge impact as role models to the wider community.
The most common motivation for volunteering is the desire to give something back. Volunteers benefit by learning, gaining experience and receiving appreciation from those they help. Volunteering is simple - it's about giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid (apart from expenses). In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent. In addition, volunteering can be a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and gain useful experience. It's also great fun!

The range of opportunities is huge. Whatever skills and experience you have, there'll be something that you can do. The best way to see what's available is to browse our vacancies.  The biggest problem for many people is finding the time to volunteer. It can reduce your choices if you don't have much time to spare, but many busy people do find suitable opportunities.

There are no age-limits on volunteering, however, if you have any concerns, ask the organisation that you are applying to.

Businesses can do it too!!

If you are a business or an employee of a business why not take up the challenge of 1 or 2 days volunteering. You could do physical challenges like painting a guide hut, or use your business skills to help a charity plan a new activity. Don't leave it to others, you have skills to offer which will really help young people in Surrey.

Surrey Youth Focus has a policy about using volunteers. There is also an excellent paper on using volunteers from the Social Market Foundation setting out the benefits to corporates and to volunteers.
